چکیده

Yellowstone National Park, USA, has more than 10,000 thermal features throughout a land area of 2.2x10 acres (just short of a million hectares). These characteristics make it unique among the world’s geothermal areas and, consequently, it has been the subject of numerous geological, geochemical, and ecological studies. Past and current research related to arsenic in the thermal waters of Yellowstone provide insights to our understanding of arsenic geochemistry in geothermal systems.

Geochemistry and Dynamics of the Yellowstone National Park Hydrothermal System!

The magmatic-hydrothermal system at Yellowstone National Park is unique among presently active systems in regard to its unparalleled geysers, tectonic environment, and magnitude of caldera-forming volcanic activity. However, over geologic time, systems like Yellowstone have been common and appear to have been responsible for the formation of many important basc-metal and precious-mctal ore depo...

Thioarsenates in geothermal waters of Yellowstone National Park: determination, preservation, and geochemical importance.

Mono-, di-, tri-, and tetrathioarsenate, as well as methylated arsenic oxy- and thioanions, were determined besides arsenite and arsenate in geothermal waters of Yellowstone National Park using anion-exchange chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Retention time match with synthetic standards, measured S:As ratios, and molecular electrospray mass spectra support the identi...

Rapid arsenite oxidation by Thermus aquaticus and Thermus thermophilus: field and laboratory investigations.

Thermus aquaticus and Thermus thermophilus, common inhabitants of terrestrial hot springs and thermally polluted domestic and industrial waters, have been found to rapidly oxidize arsenite to arsenate. Field investigations at a hot spring in Yellowstone National Park revealed conserved total arsenic transport and rapid arsenite oxidation occurring within the drainage channel. This environment w...

Studies on the Chlorophylls and Photosynthesis of Thermal Algae from Yellowstone National Park, California, and Nevada

1. Myxophyceae normally growing at 65 degrees C. evolved oxygen upon irradiation and showed evidence of retaining the power to carry on the process of photosynthesis at 20 degrees C. This indicates that extra thermal energy is not essential for photosynthesis at least over a short period of time. 2. Chlorophyll a and b found in several species of Myxophyceae growing in waters ranging in tempera...

Microbiology in Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone National Park plays host to numerous microbiological research projects — officially 23, according to the 1996 Investigators' Annual Reports. However, once categories such as aquatic ecology, the study of brucellosis and other wildlife diseases, environmental education, geochemistry and geothermal systems, and vegetation are included, the total came to at least 35 in 1996. Research p...
